HLC High Potency Powder is a unique dietary supplement that contains four proprietary, human-sourced probiotic strains and fructooligosaccharides (FOS) to promote gastrointestinal health in adults. It provides 10 billion colony-forming units (CFU) per day of two strains of Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacterium bifidum, and Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis. Additionally, it contains 600 mg of FOS per serving. In a randomized, placebo-controlled study involving 22 adults, daily supplementation with a probiotic containing Lactobacillus acidophilus supported a healthy microflora balance. Lactobacilli and Bifidobacteria, the most commonly used probiotics, help colonize the intestines and mediate the permeability of epithelial cells. After they are fermented by microbes in the colon, prebiotics – including FOS – support the growth of beneficial bacteria in the colon and further maintain and support the barrier function of intestinal epithelial cells. Their fermentation can result in the production of short chain fatty acids, including butyrate, the preferred energy source of colon cells.
